Lesson 1: God, Our Heavenly Father

There is a God

Mormon doctrine states there is a God. He is the creator of the universe and the Father of every person who has every lived upon the face of the earth. He is perfect, all-wise, all-powerful, and all-loving. Through His Son, Jesus Christ, God created this world and the whole universe and placed us here so that we could learn and grow through our experiences.

Mormon doctrine says we can know that there is a God by looking around us and observing the beauty and order of the world. In the Book of Mormon a prophet named Alma was trying to convince a man named Korihor that there was a God. He said:

Thou hast had signs enough; will ye tempt your God? Will ye say, Show unto me a sign, when ye have the testimony of all these thy brethren, and also all the holy prophets? The scriptures are laid before thee, yea, and all things denote there is a God; yea, even the earth, and all things that are upon the face of it, yea, and its motion, yea, and also all the planets which move in their regular form do witness that there is a Supreme Creator (Alma 30:44, pg 283).

Alma taught that the whole universe reminds us there is a God. The Prophet Joseph Smith, a modern prophet who taught the truth about God just like Paul did, said:

The heavens declare the glory of a God, and the firmament showeth His handiwork; and a moment’s reflection is sufficient to teach every man of common intelligence, that all these are not the mere productions of chance, nor could they be supported by any power less than an Almighty hand; and He that can mark the power of Omnipotence, inscribed upon the heavens, can also see God’s own handwriting in the sacred volume (Joseph Smith, History of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 7 Vols. 2:14).

Points to Ponder:
Do you feel that the order in nature testifies there is a God?
What do you believe about God? How do you feel about Him?

How can we know God and know what He is like?

Since the beginning of time, people have wondered about God. Some thought there was only one; others thought that there were many gods. Some have even said that there is no God. How does God let us know who He is?

In Job 11:7 in the Holy Bible we read:

Canst thou by searching find out God? canst thou find out the Almighty unto perfection?

Job’s friend here reminds us that we cannot find God, He reveals Himself to people on earth. We learn about God through Holy Prophets like Adam, Moses, Isaiah, Peter, and Paul. God revealed Himself to them and sent Angels to teach them the truth.

Read Amos 3:7 in the Holy Bible

What will God always do before he performs His work?

God has established this pattern of calling prophets and other inspired teachers who learn firsthand what God is like. They then teach us the truth, and the Holy Spirit testifies to us that what they teach us is true.

Read The Acts 10:34-48 in the Holy Bible

To whom did God show Jesus Christ?

What did God command these people to do?

What happened to those who heard Peter speak?

Read also Moroni 7:20-34, pg 522-23 in the Book of Mormon

How can we find what is good?

How do prophets learn the truth?

Read 2 Peter 1:16-18 in the Holy Bible

What does Peter say about the things he taught?

Mormon doctrine states that God always sends us prophets to teach us the truth. Without prophets, we would be left on our own trying to “find out God,” which no person can do. A prophet is one who teaches about Jesus Christ (see Revelation 19:10). The word prophet means a spokesman. A prophet is a spokesman for Jesus Christ and God. When a true prophet of God teaches, he will teach us about Jesus and what we must do. His words will be confirmed by the Holy Spirit. When we listen to the words of the prophets, the Spirit will enter our minds and hearts and fill us with peace and faith. Then we will know that he is a true prophet. A prophet will speak and write words that are inspired by God. Whenever there are problems or questions that arise in our modern world, the Prophet can learn what God’s will is for us today. A prophet’s words become scripture just as Paul’s letters became part of the Bible.

The Prophet Joseph Smith, one of the modern day prophets testified:

And now, after the many testimonies which have been given of him, this is the testimony, last of all, which we give of him: That he lives! For we saw him, even on the right hand of God; and we heard the voice bearing record that he is the Only Begotten of the Father— That by him, and through him, and of him, the worlds are and were created, and the inhabitants thereof are begotten sons and daughters unto God (Doctrine and Covenants 76:22-24).

Points to Ponder:
How do prophets learn the truth about God?
What role did prophets play in writing the scriptures (like the Bible)?
How will I recognize a true prophet?
Why would it be important to have a prophet today on the earth?

What is God like?

Through the testimonies of the many prophets who have lived, we can know for certain that there is a God and that He loves us. We can have faith that He is all-powerful and all-knowing and that He never lies. He is merciful, just, loving, patient, and kind. Because God is perfect, we can have faith in Him and trust that what He commands us to do will be for our benefit and that He will fulfill all His promises to us.

Read the following passages and write down what they teach us about God:

Bible:
Matthew 5:48
1 John 4:7-9
Hebrews 12:9
Romans 8:16
Acts 17:27-29

Book of Mormon
Mosiah 4:9 pg 155
2 Nephi 9:6 pg 72
3 Nephi 27:13-22 pg 459

Points to Ponder:
How do you feel about God? Write your thoughts down in a letter or a journal.
How does it make you feel to know that God is all-powerful and totally loving?
How does it feel to know that God is aware of you personally and wants to help you?

The Godhead

In Mormon doctrine, the Godhead is composed of God, our Heavenly Father, His Only Begotten Son, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Ghost. They are three distinct and separate personages who are united together by their absolute perfect love and power. They are three separate beings, but are one in glory, perfection, love, purpose, and power.

Jesus Christ taught this very plainly. In His prayer for us, which is in John chapter 17, he says that Eternal Life is to know God and Jesus Christ (see John 17:3). In this prayer, Jesus Christ prays to Our Heavenly Father. He says in verses 20 and 21:

Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word; That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou has sent me (John 17:20-21).

He prays that we may all be one just like He and the Father are one. Being one means to be unified in purpose, belief, love, and service. Because they are so unified, they do everything in unison. Because of this, Jesus Christ is also called God since He does the work of the Father, too. Each member of the Godhead has a role to play for us:

God the Father: Mormon doctrine affirms that God is our Heavenly Father. He created our Spirits and through Jesus Christ He created the world and everything in it. He is the one to whom we pray.

Jesus Christ: Mormon doctrine affirms Jesus Christ is our Savior and Redeemer. Through Him and his sacrifice for us on the cross, we can be saved and return to live with God the Father. He is our mediator and we always pray in His holy name. All things were created through Him.

The Holy Ghost: Mormon doctrine states that the Holy Ghost serves as the testifier. He teaches us the truth about God and comforts us when we are sad. He can also warn us of danger. He is also called the Holy Spirit or the Spirit of God.

Mormon doctrine states that the Prophet Joseph Smith in a vision saw God the Father and His Son, Jesus Christ. He testified of them this way:

When the light rested upon me I saw two Personages, whose brightness and glory defy all description, standing above me in the air. One of them spake unto me, calling me by name and said, pointing to the other—This is My Beloved Son. Hear Him (Joseph Smith-History 1:17)!

Joseph Smith saw God and Jesus Christ and was called to proclaim to the world the God lives and to teach us what God is like. He was a prophet of God just like the prophets who lived in the days of the Bible. Because of Joseph Smith’s testimony about Jesus Christ and through the inspiration of the Holy Ghost, we can know for certain that God lives, that Jesus is our Savior, and that we must all repent and listen to God’s modern prophets so that we can follow God’s will for us today.

Our Relationship to God

Mormon doctrine affirms we are literally the children of God (read Acts 17:29). The Bible teaches us that we are created in His image (see Genesis 1:27). He created us and placed us here on earth to gain physical bodies and to grow through experiences. He knew that life would be difficult for us and so He sent His Son, Jesus Christ to be our Savior and our greatest example. He taught us how to act toward one another and how to return to live with God once again. This plan to return to live with God again is called the Plan of Salvation and will be the topic of the next lesson. Because we are His children, He loves us and wants us to be happy. To help us be happy, He teaches us through the prophets how to fulfill His commandments. When we obey God, we can be happy. Also, because we the “offspring of God” (Acts 17:29), we have great worth and great potential. We are all wonderful in God’s eyes, even if we sometimes make mistakes. These mistakes hurt Him just as they hurt us, because He loves us. However, God cannot excuse our sins; we must repent of them and trust in Jesus Christ. In the next lesson we will learn more about God’s Plan for us and our potential to become perfect through Jesus Christ.

Summary:

Mormon doctrine testifies there is a God. He is perfect, all-knowing, all-powerful and He loves us very much. He created the world and is literally our Father in Heaven. Through His Son Jesus Christ he created everything we see and placed us on this earth to learn. Jesus Christ is our Savior. He and our Heavenly Father are two separate, perfect beings who are united in glory and power. They reveal themselves to prophets here on earth and those prophets teach us the truth about God and invite us to commit our lives to Him. The Holy Ghost, the third person in the Godhead, will testify to us that God lives and that Jesus is our Savior by entering our hearts and minds and bringing peace, love, joy, and faith.

The Challenge:

This week, until you start the next lesson, read and reread some of the passages about God and Jesus Christ. Ask yourself what this means to you. Pray to your Heavenly Father and ask Him to let you know He lives and loves you by sending you the peace, love, joy, and faith that come with the Holy Ghost. Take time every day to pray and meditate about what you have learned.

Read 3 Nephi 11 pg 427 in the Book of Mormon where Jesus Christ appears to the ancient inhabitants of the Americas and teaches them. Pray about what He taught and ask yourself what would change in your life if they were true. Think about what changes God would want you to make in your life and work on one of those this week. Take time to pray and to listen for the Spirit in your heart and mind.

To prepare for the next lesson ask yourself the following questions:
Who am I?
Where did I come from?
What is the purpose of my life here on earth?
Where am I going after I die?

Think about your own answers to these questions and why it would be important to know the answers. If you have other questions not addressed in this lesson, but relating to God, Jesus Christ, or prophets, look at the material available on www.meetmormonmissionaries.com or locate the nearest Mormon Chapel to you, and go there to ask a member. When you have completed this lesson to your satisfaction, reply to the email and request the second lesson. If you have any specific questions, you may ask them in your email, though because of time and work constraints, we cannot guarantee a personal response to every question.

Review of Lesson 1:

In Mormon Doctrine, God is our Father in Heaven and He loves us. He sent His Only Begotten Son Jesus Christ to save us from our sins. God and Jesus Christ are separate and distinct Beings but are one in purpose. Because God loves us, His children, He has always sent prophets to teach us the way to live to be able to return to live with Him. We can know truth by the power of the Holy Ghost. The Holy Ghost confirms and testifies of truth by entering our hearts and minds and bringing peace, love, joy, and faith (see Galatians 5:22-23).

Introduction to lesson 2: The Plan of Salvation

Essential Vocabulary:

The Fall of Adam and Eve: In Mormon Doctrine, Adam and Eve were cast out of the Garden of Eden because they ate the forbidden fruit. In the Garden of Eden they were innocent and couldn’t progress because they didn’t know good from evil. They became subject to the effects of sin and death. In the Garden of Eden food was provided for them but in the mortal world they were required to labor for their own support. After the Fall, Adam and Eve were able to have children and became the parents of mankind.

Atonement: In Mormon Doctrine, To atone is to make possible reconciliation between God and man. Jesus Christ made it possible for man to be reconciled to God by suffering the penalty of all sin in the Garden of Gethsemane and on the cross. He overcame death by being resurrected.

Resurrection: The reuniting of body and spirit after death.

Salvation: To be saved from physical and spiritual death.

Physical Death: The Separation of body and spirit.

Spiritual Death: Separation from God. We were originally separated from God because of the Fall of Adam and Eve. While living in mortality we separate ourselves from God when we sin.

Books needed:

The Holy Bible – In Mormon Doctrine states a belief in the Bible, as long as it is translated correctly. Any good translation can be used. Mormons typically use the King James Bible, and quotes in the text will come from that translation, but if you have a different translation it is okay.

The Book of Mormon – In Mormon Doctrine, the Book of Mormon is a companion volume to the Holy Bible which was translated by the Prophet Joseph Smith from ancient records. If you do not have a copy, you may get a free copy online at Mormon.org. You may also either contact the local Mormon missionaries or see the text of the Book of Mormon online at http://scriptures.lds.org/en/bm/contents. The Book of Mormon will be explained in more detail later.

The Doctrine and Covenants – The Doctrine and Covenants is a collection of divine revelations and inspired declarations given for the establishment and regulation of the kingdom of God on the earth in the last days… Most of the revelations in this compilation were received through Joseph Smith, Jun., the first prophet and president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Others were issued through some of his successors in the Presidency. (“Introductory Note,” Doctrine and Covenants) You can see the text of the Doctrine and Covenants online at http://scriptures.lds.org/en/dc/contents

Lesson 2: The Plan of Salvation

Points to ponder:

Who am I?

What is my relationship with God?

Where did I come from before this life?

What is the purpose of my life here on earth?
Where am I going after I die?

We are Children of God

In Mormon Doctrine, God is the Father of our spirits. We lived with him before we came to this earth. Just as any parent, He wants what is best for His children. He loves us and wants us to have all of the blessings that He has. This period of living with God is often called the pre-earth life.

What do the following scriptures teach us about our relationship with God?

Acts 17:29

Romans 8:16

Hebrews 12:9

In the pre-earth life, we could not receive all of the blessings God wanted for us, including a physical body. Mormon Doctrine states God presented a plan to us in which we were able to choose to come here to the earth to have opportunities to learn and grow and be tested. This gift of Agency, or the freedom to choose, is one of the greatest gifts of God. We can choose to follow God or Satan (see 2 Nephi 2:27). God knew that on the earth we would all sin and eventually die. Jesus Christ was chosen and “foreordained before the foundation of the world” (1 Peter 1:20) by the Father to be our Savior and overcome the effects of death and sin for us.

Ponder the following scriptures and what they teach us about our pre-earth life:

Jeremiah 1:5 – What does God tell Jeremiah about their relationship even before Jeremiah was conceived?

Ecclesiastes 12:7 – Where did our Spirits come from and where will they go after this life? Note the use of the word “return” in this verse. Can we return somewhere we have never been?

The Creation

As we learned in the first lesson God directed His son Jesus Christ to create this earth. (see Hebrews 1:1-2, Colossians 1:16-17). The earth was created for us as a place where we could come to learn and grow and be tested. On this earth we do not remember living with God in the Pre-earth life. This causes us to walk by faith and not by sight. (see 2 Cor. 5:6-7)

Our First Parents

Mormon Doctrine states in order for all of us to have the opportunity to come to earth Heavenly Father placed our first parents, Adam and Eve, in the Garden of Eden. They were created in the image of God with bodies of flesh and bones. They received commandments in the Garden of Eden and were tempted by Satan to disobey God. We learn much about Adam and Eve from the scriptures. Please answer the following questions as you ponder the indicated passages of scripture.

What were Adam and Eve commanded?

Genesis 2:15-17

Genesis 1:28

What would have happened if Adam and Eve had not transgressed (eaten the forbidden fruit)?

2 Nephi 2: 22-23

Why was it important that they did eat the fruit?

2 Nephi 2:22-25

Points to Ponder:

Did Heavenly Father know that Adam and Eve would eat the fruit?

Why should we be grateful for Adam and Eve?

How has knowing pain and hard work helped you appreciate the joyful experiences of your life?

As we read in 2 Nephi, Adam and Eve were innocent in the Garden of Eden. They couldn’t experience joy because they didn’t know pain. They were tempted by Satan to eat the forbidden fruit and they partook. (see Genesis 3) Because they ate the fruit they became mortal, subject to the obstacles of sin and death, and were cast out of the Garden of Eden. In Mormon Doctrine, this separation from God is known as the Fall. They were then able to have children, making it possible for all of God’s spirit children to come to earth and gain physical bodies. We are all given moral agency, the ability to choose between good and evil, which makes it possible for us to learn and progress. The Fall of Adam and Eve was a necessary part of God’s plan. Only because of the Fall are we able to come to earth and gain physical bodies.

The Purpose of life

Points to Ponder:

What is the purpose of my life here on earth?

How is it possible that I, as a sinner, can be forgiven and be able to live in the presence of my Father in Heaven? What do I need to know and do for this to happen?

Because Adam and Eve ate the forbidden fruit we have the opportunity to be here on the earth. While we are here on the earth we have experiences that bring us happiness. We also have experiences that bring us pain and sorrow, some of which is caused by the sinful acts of others. Mormon Doctrine states these experiences provide us opportunities to learn and to grow, to distinguish good from evil, and to make choices. When we obey the commandments of God we are blessed and find joy in this life. When we sin, or disobey the commandments of God, we are filled with unhappiness, guilt, and shame.

What is the purpose of this life?

Alma 34:32

2 Nephi 2:25

Alma 12:21-24

Points to Ponder:

What can I do to prepare to live with God?

What brings you true joy in your life?

How can we know good from evil?

Moroni 7:12-19

In Mormon Doctrine, there are two great obstacles that need to be overcome for us to return to live with God. The first obstacle is physical death or the separation of body and spirit. Because of the Fall of Adam and Eve, every person on earth has an imperfect, mortal body and will eventually die. The second obstacle we face is spiritual death, or separation from God. No unclean thing can live in the presence of God. We all sin (see Romans 3:23), making us unclean and therefore unworthy to live in God’s presence. We cannot overcome these two obstacles by ourselves. We are wholly dependent upon the Atonement of Jesus Christ.

The Atonement of Jesus Christ

Points to Ponder:

What did Jesus Christ do to make it possible for us to overcome the effects of sin and death?

What must we do in order to apply the Atonement and receive forgiveness?

In Mormon Doctrine, Jesus Christ overcame the obstacles of death and sin for us by performing the Atonement. The Atonement included His suffering in the Garden of Gethsemane and His suffering and death on the cross, and it ended with His Resurrection. Because Jesus Christ was resurrected we will all be resurrected. Our bodies will be perfect and we will never again experience pain or sickness. To pay the price of our sins, Jesus suffered in the Garden of Gethsemane and suffered and died on the cross. We can only be saved from our sins through the Savior’s grace and mercy. Jesus himself has outlined what we need to do to apply the atonement and be cleansed. We must exercise faith in Him, repent, be baptized, receive the gift of the Holy Ghost, and endure to the end. As we do this the Lord promises to cleanse us from our sins.

What does it mean to be resurrected?

Alma 11:42-43

What witnesses do we have of Christ’s resurrection?

3 Nephi 11

John 20

What must we do to apply the Atonement and be cleansed?

3 Nephi 27:19-20

What would happen if there was no Atonement made?

Alma 34:8-9

Did Christ suffer just for our sins? What else did He take upon Himself?

Alma 7:11-13

Jesus Christ was the only person to live a perfect, sinless life, and therefore the only person capable of performing the Atonement. Christ satisfied the demands of justice by taking the punishment for our sins. He asks us in return to live his gospel. This will be the topic of lesson 4.

Where do I go after this life?

The Spirit World

In Mormon Doctrine, death is a necessary part of God’s plan. At death, our bodies and spirits are separated. Our spirits live on and go to the spirit world while our bodies go to the grave until the time of the resurrection. The spirits of those who are righteous go to spirit paradise. Paradise is a place of peace where the righteous shall rest from the troubles of this world. The Spirits of those who are wicked go to spirit prison. The gospel is preached in the Spirit world so that everyone has an equal opportunity to accept Christ and His atoning sacrifice.

Where in the scriptures does it talk about the spirit world?

Alma 40:11-14

Where was Christ’s Spirit while His body was in the tomb?

1 Peter 3:19-20

Why is the gospel preached to those who are dead?

1 Peter 4:6

Mormon Doctrine states we live in the spirit world until the time of the resurrection. At the time of the resurrection our bodies and spirits are reunited and we are brought into the presence of God to be judged.

What will we know when we are resurrected?

Alma 11:42-44

2 Nephi 9:14-15

What are we judged by?

Alma 41:3

Doctrine & Covenants 137:9

James 2:14-24

Revelation 20:12

Where do we go after the judgment?

In Mormon Doctrine, God will judge each person individually by their thoughts, desires, and works. God has prepared different kingdoms, or degrees of glory, to reward His children based on how they live His teachings. There are three kingdoms, or degrees of glory which we may inherit. These are the celestial, terrestrial, and telestial kingdoms. They are compared in glory to the sun, the moon, and the stars.

The celestial kingdom – In Mormon doctrine, those who live the gospel of Jesus Christ (see lesson 4) and are cleansed from sin through the Atonement shall inherit Eternal Life and receive a place in the celestial kingdom. Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ reside in the celestial kingdom. Those who inherit the celestial kingdom will live with God and those of their family who qualify. In 1 Corinthians 15:40-42 the celestial kingdom is compared to the glory of the sun. For additional information read Doctrine and Covenants 76:50-70.

The Terrestrial Kingdom – In Mormon doctrine, Those who live honorable lives but refuse to accept the fullness of Christ’s gospel will inherit the terrestrial kingdom. For additional information read Doctrine and Covenants 76:71-80

The Telestial Kingdom – In Mormon doctrine, Those who continue in their sins and do not repent will inherit the telestial kingdom. For additional information read Doctrine and Covenants 76:81-85

Summary:

In Mormon Doctrine, the plan of Salvation answers the questions “where did we come from? why are we here? and where are we going?” We lived with God before we came to this earth. As a part of His plan the earth was created for us to inhabit so that we could prove ourselves worthy to live in his presence again. Because of the Fall of Adam and Eve we will die and become separated from God. The Atonement of Jesus Christ allows us to overcome the effects of the Fall. While on earth, we must exercise faith, repent, be baptized, receive the Gift of the Holy Ghost and keep the commandments so that we can fully apply the Atonement. When we die our spirits go to the spirit world until the time of our resurrection. After the resurrection we will be brought before Christ to be judged according to our works and the desires of our hearts. According to our judgment, we will be put in either the celestial, terrestrial, or telestial kingdom.

The Challenge:

This material is probably very new to you. We challenge you to review the principles of the plan of salvation often. Please read and ponder the scripture references provided and then pray to know that what you have learned is true. We also challenge you to think of your own life and write down what you need to do to prepare yourself to meet God. Repent and make necessary changes.

To prepare for the next lesson ask yourself the following questions:

Did Christ establish a church while on the earth? How was it organized?

What happened to the church that Christ established? Where is it today?

Review of Lesson 2: The Plan of Salvation

The plan of salvation answers the questions, where did we come from? why are we here? and where are we going? We lived with God before we came to this earth. As a part of His plan the earth was created for us to inhabit so that we could prove ourselves worthy to live in His presence again. Because of the Fall of Adam and Eve, we will die and become separated from God. After the resurrection we will be brought before Jesus Christ to be judged according to our works and the desires of our hearts. According to our judgment, we will inherit the celestial, terrestrial, or telestial kingdom.

Introduction to Lesson 3: The Church of Jesus Christ in Ancient and Modern Times

Essential Vocabulary:

Apostasy – A period of spiritual darkness caused by the rejection of God’s teachings. People, communities, and nations fall into apostasy when they reject God’s chosen prophets.

Priesthood - The authority of God given to man to act in His name for the salvation of His children.

Prophet - A man that is called by God to speak for Him. Prophets teach God’s children about His nature and what He expects of them. All prophets bear witness of Jesus Christ as the Savior of the world.

Books Needed:

The Holy Bible – any good translation can be used. Mormons typically use the King James Version of the Bible, and quotes in the text will come from that translation, but if you have a different translation, that is okay.

The Book of Mormon – A companion volume to the Holy Bible which was translated by the Prophet Joseph Smith from ancient records. If you do not have a copy, you may get a free copy online at Mormon.org. You may also either contact the local Mormon missionaries or see the text of the Book of Mormon online at http://scriptures.lds.org/en/contents. The Book of Mormon will be explained in more detail in this lesson.

Lesson 3: The Church of Jesus Christ in Ancient and Modern Times

God calls prophets to teach His children

We learned in the plan of salvation that God desires us to be with Him after this life. He wants us to experience joy, and He knows what we need to do while on this earth to obtain true joy. God has always revealed His plan for us to be happy through prophets of God. Prophets are holy men of God who are called to be true messengers of Jesus Christ. Amos, an Old Testament prophet taught “Surely the Lord God will do nothing, but he revealeth his secret unto his servants the prophets.” (Amos 3:7) Therefore, prophets are called to teach the true gospel of Jesus Christ and administer ordinances such as baptism by immersion and receiving the gift of the Holy Ghost. Prophets are able to do this because they are given the Priesthood, or the authority to act in the name of God for the salvation of mankind. Sadly, not everyone accepts the teachings of prophets. In fact, throughout the Old and New Testaments, there are repeated examples of people persecuting, rejecting, and even killing the prophets. When people become so wicked, God removes the priesthood and stops calling prophets, and the people fall into a state of apostasy. During periods of apostasy, true doctrines are corrupted and people fall into great unbelief. There is a noticeable pattern throughout the Bible of prophets being called to teach the truth, and then people falling into apostasy. After a period of apostasy, another prophet is called to restore the true teachings of Jesus Christ to the earth. Prophets such as Noah, Abraham, and Moses are examples of prophets called to restore truth.

Points to ponder:

What is the importance of having a prophet on the earth?

Why are there times in history in which God takes His prophets from the earth?

Jesus Christ established His Church

A few hundred years before the time of Jesus Christ, the people again fell into apostasy. Jesus Christ, our Savior, helped to bring the church and His teachings out of this Apostasy. During the ministry of Jesus Christ, He performed many miracles and taught His gospel to the multitudes. To establish His church, Christ called twelve special disciples whom He named Apostles (Luke 6:13). He gave them priesthood authority by laying His hands upon their heads and ordaining them. He said to them in John 15:16,

“Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you.”

How did Jesus Christ establish His Church and why was it established this way?

Ephesians 4:11-14

How did the different positions in the Church work together?

1 Corinthians 12:13-29

What was the foundation of the Church?

Ephesians 2:19-20

Jesus Christ and the Apostles were the foundation of His Church, and He constantly taught them how to govern the affairs of the Church. Christ knew that soon He would be gone from the earth, and the Church would be left to the Apostles. When His time came, Christ willingly suffered for our sins in the Garden of Gethsemane and suffered the torture and agony of being hung on the cross. He was resurrected from the tomb and continued to guide His Church through His Apostles. Sadly, even after the Savior’s ministry, the people gradually rejected the Church and the teachings of Jesus Christ. The Apostles and many of the disciples of Christ were rejected and killed, and the Church ultimately fell away.

The Great Apostasy

Points to Ponder:

Christ and the Apostles were the foundation of His Church. What happened to the Church after they were killed?

What did Christ tell His Apostles about what was going to happen to them?

Matthew 24:9-11

What did Paul say would happen to the Church before the Second Coming of Christ would occur?

2 Thessalonians 2:1-3

What does the Book of Mormon teach about the false churches that would be built up after Christ’s Church fell away?

2 Nephi 28:3-5

2 Nephi 26:20-21

After the death of Christ and the Apostles, the Church fell into another apostasy. This is referred to by Mormons as the “great Apostasy.” Christ and His apostles had kept the Church together by correcting false teachings and practices. Without these individuals and the priesthood that they held, false teachings entered the Church. Ordinances such as the correct way to baptize and receive the gift of the Holy Ghost were changed over time. Doctrines such as the nature of God the Father, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Ghost were changed. Over the course of the next couple centuries, the Church of Jesus Christ had completely changed, and had become a church of men’s teachings. Eventually, during the Middle Ages, there were men and women who started to recognize that the teachings and practices of the church were not in harmony with the gospel of Jesus Christ. Inspired men and women protested against the churches of their time. Many spoke of the need for a restoration of truth, but none of them claimed that God had called them to restore the church. The protests of these people led to many Protestant churches being formed, which resulted in an increased emphasis on religious freedom. Just as had happened many times throughout the Bible, the world was again being prepared for another prophet to be called to restore the truth and establish the Church of Jesus Christ.

The Restoration of Christ’s Church in the last days

Points to ponder:

Why did the church need to be restored?

How did Christ give the priesthood to the Twelve Apostles? How was it restored?

What would it have been like to live in the time of Joseph Smith with all of the religious contention that surrounded him?

To bring back His Church to the earth, Jesus Christ called another prophet. This prophet’s name was Joseph Smith. Joseph Smith grew up in the early 1800′s in upstate New York. During his teenage years, there was a great religious excitement in his town. The different churches were contending with each other to convert everyone to their respective faiths. The Bible teaches that in Jesus Christ’s time there was “one Lord, one faith, one baptism” (Ephesians 4:5). Joseph was searching for the one true Church that Christ had established. He describes his feelings during this time and what he did to find out the truth in his history:

During this time of great excitement my mind was called up to serious reflection and great uneasiness; but though my feelings were deep and often poignant, still I kept myself aloof from all these parties, though I attended their several meetings as often as occasion would permit… but so great were the confusion and strife among the different denominations, that it was impossible for a person young as I was, and so unacquainted with men and things, to come to any certain conclusion who was right and who was wrong.

In the midst of this war of words and tumult of opinions, I often said to myself: What is to be done? Who of all these parties are right; or, are they all wrong together? If any one of them be right, which is it, and how shall I know it?

While I was laboring under the extreme difficulties caused by the contests of these parties of religionists, I was one day reading the Epistle of James, first chapter and fifth verse, which reads: If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.

Never did any passage of scripture come with more power to the heart of man than this did at this time to mine. It seemed to enter with great force into every feeling of my heart. I reflected on it again and again, knowing that if any person needed wisdom from God, I did; for how to act I did not know, and unless I could get more wisdom than I then had, I would never know; for the teachers of religion of the different sects understood the same passages of scripture so differently as to destroy all confidence in settling the question by an appeal to the Bible. (Joseph Smith-History 1:8, 10-12)

After Joseph read James 1:5, he knew that the only way he was going to find out which church to join was to ask God. He had asked everyone else. He spoke with the many pastors and teachers in his area but they all had very different opinions on what the Bible was teaching. He knew that the answer he needed was going to come from God. He had great faith in the words of James 1:5 that if he were to ask God that he would receive an answer and that God would not upbraid, or scold him for asking a question. In the spring of 1820 he went to a quiet grove of trees near his home to pray. He wanted to pray vocally in a place where he could be alone to commune with his Father in Heaven. As Joseph Smith prayed, he had an incredible experience in which he saw God, the Father, and His Son, Jesus Christ. Joseph described the experience in this way:

I saw a pillar of light exactly over my head, above the brightness of the sun, which descended gradually until it fell upon me.

When the light rested upon me I saw two Personages, whose brightness and glory defy all description, standing above me in the air. One of them spake unto me, calling me by name and said, pointing to the other-This is My Beloved Son. Hear Him! (Joseph Smith-History 1:16-17)

Heavenly Father introduced His Son, Jesus Christ, to Joseph. Jesus answered Joseph’s question. He told Joseph not to join any of the churches because they were all wrong. He said, “they draw near to me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me, they teach for doctrines the commandments of men, having a form of godliness, but they deny the power thereof” (Joseph Smith-History 1:19).

Even though many good people believed in Christ and tried to understand and teach His gospel, they did not have the fullness of truth or the priesthood authority to baptize and perform other saving ordinances.

Joseph Smith was called to be a prophet, and over the next few years, he was prepared to restore Christ’s Church on the earth. The Church was established in 1830. The name of the Church is the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The reason for this name is that it is the very Church Christ established when He was on the earth. This Church has now been restored in these last days, or latter days, before His Second Coming.

Before the Church could be restored to the earth, the priesthood had to be restored. In 1829, several heavenly messengers were sent to bring back the authority of the priesthood. John the Baptist appeared and conferred upon Joseph Smith and his associate Oliver Cowdery the Aaronic Priesthood, which includes the authority to perform the ordinance of baptism. Later, Peter, James, and John (three of Christ’s original Apostles) conferred upon Joseph and Oliver the Melchizedek Priesthood, the same authority that they had received under the hands of Jesus Christ. With this authority, Joseph was able to bestow the gift of the Holy Ghost, establish Christ’s Church, and call Twelve Apostles.

From the time of Joseph Smith, the Church has been led by Jesus Christ through a prophet and Twelve Apostles. The current prophet and President of the Church is Thomas S. Monson.

How can I know that Joseph Smith was a true prophet?

We learn from the Bible that we can judge a prophet by their fruits. Matthew 7:16-20 reads:

Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles? Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit. A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.

We learn from these verses that if a tree brings forth good fruit, we can know that it is a good tree. If a prophet brings forth good fruits, or works, we can know that the prophet is a true prophet.

The Lord provided a fruit of the prophet Joseph Smith. Joseph was led to an ancient record of scripture comparable to the Bible. This record, engraven upon gold plates, was translated through the power of God by Joseph Smith and published as the Book of Mormon: Another Testament of Jesus Christ. The Book of Mormon contains the record of prophets that God called in the ancient Americas and His dealings with them. The Book of Mormon is convincing evidence that Joseph Smith was a prophet.

Read the following paragraphs from the introduction to the Book of Mormon and answer these questions:

We invite all men everywhere to read the Book of Mormon, to ponder in their hearts the message it contains, and then to ask God, the Eternal Father, in the name of Christ if the book is true. Those who pursue this course and ask in faith will gain a testimony of its truth and divinity by the power of the Holy Ghost. (See Moroni 10:3-5.)

Those who gain this divine witness from the Holy Spirit will also come to know by the same power that Jesus Christ is the Savior of the world, that Joseph Smith is his revelator and prophet in these last days, and that The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is the Lord’s kingdom once again established on the earth, preparatory to the Second Coming of the Messiah.

How can I know that the Book of Mormon is true?

What do I need to do?

How will the answer come?

When I know that the Book of Mormon is true, what else will I know?

To gain a testimony of the Book of Mormon a person must read it, ponder, and pray in faith to know that it is true. We are promised that if we do this the Holy Ghost will manifest the truth of the Book of Mormon to us. As the Book of Mormon is a fruit of the Prophet Joseph Smith, we also know that he was a true prophet and that Christ’s Church has been restored through him.

The Book of Mormon is primarily a testament of Jesus Christ. The title page of the Book of Mormon declares that one of the purposes of the Book of Mormon is to convince Jew and Gentile that Jesus is the Christ and that He manifests Himself to all nations. The assignment given at the end of lesson 1 was to read 3 Nephi 11. This chapter is the beginning of Christ’s ministry among the people of the Americas. The introduction to the Book of Mormon describes Christ’s ministry in this way:

The crowning event recorded in the Book of Mormon is the personal ministry of the Lord Jesus Christ among the Nephites [the people of the Americas] soon after His Resurrection. It puts forth the doctrines of the gospel, outlines the plan of salvation, and tells men what they must do to gain peace in this life and eternal salvation in the life to come.

How can we know that the Book of Mormon is true?

As we read in the introduction to the Book of Mormon, prayer is central to discovering spiritual truths. The Holy Ghost will manifest the truthfulness of the Book of Mormon as we pray with real intent. Real intent means that we intend to act upon the answer that we receive.

To pray we first address our Heavenly Father. We then give gratitude for the blessings that we have received. Next, we ask Him for the things that we desire. We can ask for any blessings that we need as well as answers to questions that we have. As we pray to know that the Book of Mormon is true, God will answer us with a spiritual assurance by the power of the Holy Ghost. We close our prayers by saying, “in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.”

The assurance from the Holy Ghost usually comes in a quiet manner. Paul describes the feelings of the Spirit in his epistle to the Galatians:

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. (Galatians 5:22-23)

As we pray we will gain a testimony by these feelings of the Holy Ghost.

Summary:

Throughout time God has called prophets to teach His children how to return to live with Him. Many times throughout history the prophets were rejected and even killed. When the prophets were rejected there were times of apostasy, or falling away from the truth. When Christ came to the earth He taught His gospel and established His Church. Just as the prophets of old were rejected, Jesus Christ Himself, the Son of God, was rejected and killed. After His death the Apostles continued to guide the Church until they were also killed. The world experienced a long night of Apostasy. Just as He had done in the past, God called another prophet to end this apostasy and restore the Church. Joseph Smith was that chosen prophet. He received the priesthood authority and was directed to establish the Church of Jesus Christ in these last days. The Book of Mormon is convincing evidence that Joseph Smith was a prophet. We can know that the Book of Mormon is true and that Joseph Smith was a prophet through sincere study and prayer.

The Challenge:
